Kenji Herbert was born on November 26th, 1987 in Vienna to a Japanese mother and an Austrian Father.
He grew up in Osaka and Kobe, Japan and began taking lessons on violin from age 6 and picked up the guitar when he was 14.
Kenji has been attending the Seminar for Jazz and Improvised Music in Salzburg regularly since 2004 where he had lessons with Wolfgang Muthspiel and Nguyen Le
and had the chance to jam with some of his heroes such as his uncle Peter Herbert, Jim Black, Ingrid Jensen, George Garzone, Huw Warren and Mark Dresser.
Other musical highlights in his life include the meeting of Yuiga Hayakawa, a young sax genius in Japan, and gigging a lot together; Sessions at SUB with Mitsuru Nishiyama (b),
a performance with the Motherfunkers, playing a duo gig with Peter Herbert in Paris, and going on a Swiss-Tour with Mike Westbrook and the DKSJ-Allstar-Band.
Currently Kenji is a student at the Jazzschool in Basel, Switzerland where he is studying with Wolfgang Muthspiel.
